I am amazed to see the complete lack of discussion here as to the role the Railway played in the origins of the Second Sino-Japanese War. The South Manchuria Railway, the tiny stretch of Japanese territory along it, the largely autonomous Kwantung Army, and the security concerns of both that Army and officials in Tokyo, were the crucial initiating factors in the Japanese invasion of Manchuria.
